The ICE53 Sport and Tourism is a boat with a dual soul, the sporty one ready for racing and the cruising one.
The ICE YACHTS yard and the Felci Yacht Design team have joined forces once again to produce one of the most exciting and innovative projects in their collaboration.
The ICE 53 ST was born with the desire to introduce a high performance yacht and immediately became the new true racer in the ICE Yachts line destined for an important transalpine owner, already the owner of a 52RS EVO. At first look, the bowsprit immediately makes it clear that we are dealing with a pure racing yacht and is specific to this model.
The mission was to significantly improve the already high performance of the ICE 52RS and make the new ICE 53ST a beautiful and fast boat in the performance-cruising 50-foot category. Design and construction had the same watchword: OPTIMIZATION.
Since the sports version required significant weight control, the studio focused on all the macro and micro elements, starting from the choice to build the boat in full carbon, to the realisation of customised carbon parts, including the gennaker hauled down retriever.
Compared to the “standard RS” version, the ST has a weight reduction of over two tonnes, with an approximate dry weight of 10.5 tonnes and a sail plan implemented both upwind and downwind.
On deck, efficient steering measures have been made, including the use of a deflector on the backstay and the management of the jib sheet with a 3D system.
The keel is a new custom design for this ICE 53 Sport Touring, with a final draft of 3.4 metres.
It is made of Weldox700 steel with high mechanical characteristics, while the bulb is CNC machined according to innovative CFD studies and has a weight of 3700 kg to add to the 600 kg of the blade.
The rudder, with its carbon blade and shaft, has been designed from scratch and is very elongated with a reduced lateral surface, giving excellent control even when the boat is heeled or heavily loaded.
The mast is obviously made of high-modulus carbon, prepared and studied together with Axxon’s Racing Department, drawing on their experience on many racers up to 90 feet.
The complex design work was to switch from the minimalist and ‘open space’ sports configuration to the cruising, comfortable and elegant one, without penalising the two versions.
The two layouts are therefore very different from each other, and have required both design and construction work to integrate the two versions in every detail.
The finish of the interiors is a well-balanced mix of white painted and fairing surfaces and lightweight panels with a veneered finish. This results in a considerable weight saving compared to a traditional construction, without sacrificing the quality of the carpentry work, the refinement of the finishes and the excellence of the details. In the name of comfort there are many standard accessories on board, including electric toilets and watermaker.
Attention to safety remains a central theme in both design and construction.
